Summer 1 - Flexible Learning Map

Summer 1

The children have had a fantastic term immersing themselves in our learning adventure Food Glorious Food.

On our learning adventure launch day, we read the story Biscuit Bear by Mini Grey and designed and decorated a biscuit. These were a bit hit! The children also explored what a healthy meal might look like and made their own healthy meal plates.

We visited the co-op to search for healthy and unhealthy foods. We looked at the labels to see what information this told us. They asked us if we could create some posters for them to display in their window to give customers some tips on how to stay healthy. We happily accepted and created some fantastic posters for them to display.

In English and Guided Reading, we listened to the story Pattan’s Pumpkin. There was a flood where Pattan lived in the mountains and he used the giant pumpkin he had grown as a shelter and a boat for his family. The children made predictions about what might happen next and used their inference skills to think about how the characters might be feeling at different points in the story.

In Maths, the children have counted up to 100, made 2 digit numbers and put numbers in order. They have also practised adding and subtracting numbers and solving addition and subtraction problems. Lastly, the children practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We then grouped objects into 2s, 5s and 10s before organising them into arrays.

For DT, we learnt how to chop and prepare food. The children learnt some different ways to cut the food safely. We then used the skills we had learnt to prepare the toppings for our very own pizzas with a side salad.

We had lots of fun in Science this term, learning all about plants and how they grow! We planted some of our own tomato and strawberry plants and made sure we looked after them. We also grew a bean each in a bag and watched it over the term, recording what we noticed in our bean diaries.

In Computing, we practised our typing skills. On the Ipads, we drew healthy food and typed a short sentence about it. On the laptop, we created a poster.

In PSHE, we learnt about our physical and mental health and why it is so important to look after both.

This term in RE, the children thought about what it means to be a God. We learnt about Gods from different religions (Christianity and Hinduism) before drawing a picture of what God means to us.

We have had a fantastic term in Year 1 and are looking forward to our final one of the year!
