Year 1 BLOG

Autumn 2

We launched our Superheroes Learning Adventure with a superhero dress up day. The children looked brilliant in their costumes! We thought about what makes a superhero and considered real life superheroes as well as ones we see in comic books and movies.

In English, we read the book Traction Man by Mini Grey. We practised our reading skills by predicting what might happen next and making inferences about how the characters were feeling at different points in the story. The children enjoyed writing their own versions of Traction Man, creating new adventures for him.

With it now being Autumn, we learnt all about this season in Science. We went on a walk around our school grounds to look for signs of autumn and collected some nature that we found. We noticed that the colours we saw were mostly red, orange and brown. We also learnt about the weather this term and applied what we had learnt by creating our own weather reports.

In Maths, we practised counting in 2s and used our knowledge of these to solve problems and spot patterns. We then practised counting to 50 in ones, forwards and backwards. We thought about how we knew if a number was larger or smaller and ordered numbers on a number line. We also revisited 2D shapes, naming them and describing their properties.

With Christmas fast approaching, we made our own Christmas stockings. The children designed their stocking and chose their colours. They then learnt sewing skills and practised a running stitch before applying this by stitching two pieces of fabric together to make their stocking. They chose how they would like to decorate it and some children had a go at stitching on their initial.

Finally, the children loved learning Christmas songs and performing them to all of their grownups. It was their first time on the stage and they did brilliantly, despite a few nerves! Well done Year 1!
