Learning at Home

Year 1 BLOG 

Autumn 1

The children made an excellent start to Year 1 and settled back into school life after the Summer holidays. Our first Learning Adventure was Out And About. This was a Geography based Adventure where we were able to get to know more about our local area by going on a walk down Picket Twenty Way. During our walk, we saw the Community Centre, the shop and the urban park. When we were back at school, we thought about the route and plotted the places that we saw on a large map. We then used the Beebots and practised giving them directions in order to get to the different places on our map.


In English, we read the story The Naughty Bus by Jan Oke. The bus had lots of adventures around the house. We particularly liked the part where the bus drove through the baked beans! The children enjoyed creating their own naughty bus stories by putting toy buses in different places around the classroom and taking pictures and videos of it. The pictures that we took inspired us to write our own stories about the naughty bus. We also read the book The Jolly Postman by Allan Ahlberg. We enjoyed reading fairytales and writing letters to the different characters from the book.


In Maths, we revisited our learning from Year R by practising counting up to 20 and finding one more and one less than numbers up to 20. We learnt about partitioning and practised splitting 5, 6 and 7 in different ways, writing the addition number sentences to match.


In Science, we learnt about the body and our senses. We took it in turns to draw around each other and label different parts of the body. We tasted different foods and talked about our likes and dislikes. We used our sense of smell to guess what was in the pots.
