Autumn 1 - Out and About
It’s hard to believe that a whole term has been and gone already! We are so amazed at how well the children have settled into Year 1. The enthusiasm and excitement that they have shown towards their learning has been brilliant. Keep it up Year 1!
Our topic this term has been Out and About. We launched our topic by walking around the Pilgrims’ Cross school grounds. We enjoyed walking past Year R and waving at our previous teachers as well as having a good look at the rest of the school building. We talked about what we might see beyond the school grounds into Picket Twenty such as roads, cars and houses. When we weren’t out on our walk, we drew a place that we liked to go outside of school such as the park, a grandparent’s house or the seaside.
We looked at the story ‘The Naughty Bus’ and loved listening to the adventures that it went on. We even retold some parts of the story using our small world area. Our favourite bit was when the bus drove through the beans! Yuck! We also read the story ‘You Can’t Take an Elephant on the Bus.’ We used our maths skills to measure the length of different animals to help us find a vehicle that would be suitable for them to travel in. We also thought of our own animals and vehicles to write about, trying hard to write a sentence using finger spaces.
We have really enjoyed learning about different vehicles this term and designing creating our own out of junk modelling this term.
In maths we have revisited our numbers to 20, especially the tricky teen numbers. We pIut them in order, made
them out of numicon and practised saying what is one more or one less than a number. We have also solved problems involving partitioning. The bus only had 5 seats, some upstairs and some downstairs. We had to work out how many ways the 5 passengers could be split across the bus.
In Geography, we have been learning about maps and drew a map of our classroom from a bird’s eye view. We have also learnt how to give each other directions and practised this before applying our knowledge to Computing by programming the beebots.
In Science, we have been learning about the Seasons. We thought about the differences you might see in each season before focussing on the season we are in now – autumn! We absolutely loved going on an autumn walk and collecting some autumn treasures to take back to the classroom. We couldn’t believe all of the different colours of the leaves.
We then created our own Andy Goldsworthy inspired art with what we had collected.
To finish off our autumn learning, we wrote autumn poems. We went on another autumn walk but this time really thought about all of our senses, using them to help us describe what we could see, hear, touch, smell and taste.
Thank you for a great first half term Year 1!
