Spring 1 Pole to Pole

What a start to 2019! The year 5 team are so proud of the way Pine class has worked this term and we have ALL thoroughly enjoyed this very ‘cool’ adventure!

In English we have enjoyed writing Scott of the Antarctic diaries and writing and filming our news reports on the Larsen C iceberg carving.

In Maths, we have been working on our shape knowledge including estimating and calculating angles. The children used their knowledge to complete their amazing Antarctic Obstacle race and create their icebergs for their news reports.

The pupils have researched the ice caps and polar exploration and used drama to explore the conditions polar explorers would face.

A highlight must be the visit of the ‘explorer dome’ which took the children on a journey through different climates which they explored through practical activities.

Our investigations into the properties of materials included a separation challenge during our parent event to decontaminate some medicine. Due to the children’s careful scientific working, this was successful and Mrs Lucas has made a full recovery!

In RE, our pupils have worked incredibly well on the theme of ‘Temptation’ and have been studying the story of Adam and Eve to support their understanding.

This whole adventure has been such a joy to share with the pupils- next time we head into the jungle as our ‘Pole to Pole Adventure’ continues!

Thank you for your continued support with homework and reading, it is greatly appreciated by us all.

Best wishes

Autumn Term 2 - Earth, Space & The Universe (Continued) Blog

Year 5 returned from half term full of energy to tackle their learning adventures. We began with our 215 mini-adventure to decorate our soldier for the installation at Vigo Recreation Ground. The children read biographies of different soldiers and presented a summary to the class to help us to choose our soldier then investigated life in the trenches and the causes of World War I. The pupils read and responded with art to war poetry before finding out more about the events our soldier had missed because he had given his life for his country. We created headlines from these events to form part of our finished soldier.

This term in English we have enjoyed writing our non-chronological reports, writing as experts on a newly discovered planet to create a class ’planetary guide to the galaxy.’ The children also investigated figurative language as part of our ‘Universal Poetry’ mini-adventure, creating and performing our poems to each other.

In Maths, as well as continuing to develop our mental maths skills, we have been working on our understanding of multiplication and division, which has enabled Pine Class to defeat an alien invasion of Pilgrims’ Cross!

In Art, we were inspired by different styles of painting to create our own images for our planetary guide to the universe. The children have also really enjoyed investigating forces and trying to save ‘Yolk Skywalker’ on his re-entry to Earth. The pupils have all worked incredibly hard towards our Christmas production of ‘Mr Humbug Sees the Light’ learning the songs and actions and creating props for the Year 6 actors.

In RE, pupils have got to grips with some difficult concepts. They learned about prophecy through incarnation contextualised in the Christmas story.

Next term we return to Earth with our ‘Pole to Pole’ Adventure!

Thank you for your continued support with homework and reading, it is greatly appreciated by us all.

Best wishes

Year 5 Autumn 2 Newsletter (Earth, Space & The Universe continued.....)

Autumn Term 1 - Earth, Space & The Universe Blog

What a start to our New Year, we are so proud of the way Pine class has returned to Pilgrims' Cross and the confidence they have shown with the new year 5 curriculum!

This term in English we have enjoyed writing incredible Star Wars action narratives (they were epic!) and have begun creating our own planetary guide to the Universe! As part of our International Space Week detour we explored the reasons for and against space exploration and wrote persuasive letters to Sam Gymiah MP, minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation.

In Maths we have been working on place value and problem solving with addition and subtraction to create some amazing planetary guides for the classroom and solving problems from the International space station! The whole class has been working really hard on using the formal written methods for calculating and organising their work clearly!

Year 5 Science was started with our ‘wow’ rocket launch and the pupils have been astounding me with their own research on our solar system. We have learned about the phases of the moon and the reason for day and night on earth! In music, we have been listening to and reflecting upon the work of Gustav Holst (The Planet Suit).

In RE, pupils have worked incredibly well on the theme of ‘Belief through Creation and Fall' exploring Christian beliefs and Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.

We can't wait to continue this adventure next term!

Thank you for your continued support with homework and reading, it is greatly appreciated by us all.

Best wishes
